Objective – Establish the relation between anthropometry, functional capability, hand grip strength (HGS) and clinical outcomes on patients subjected to Gastrointestinal Tract surgeries. Methods – This research is a prospective cross-sectional study conducted in a public hospital at Distrito Federal, Brasília – Brazil between January and August 2016. The sample studied were hospitalized patients who will be going to Gastrointestinal Tract surgeries. A questionnaire was applied on the first 72 hours of hospital admission. Information about sociodemographic variants, anthropometry measures, hand grip strength (HGS) and functional capability were collected and analyzed. Results – Overall, the study attendance was 50 individuals both sexes, age between 20 and 59 years old. It was found a higher eutrophic rating (24,3±6,33kg/m²) on male gender and overweight (28,05±4,67kg/m²) on female gender according with BMI values. Primarily, the adequation percentage of hand grip strength (HGS) was lower to 85% of the average on both sexes. About the correlation results, it was observed a strong and considerable connection between the nutritional assessment parameters, particularly of those which associate BMI, mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC), mid-arm muscle circumference (MAMC) and hand grip strength (HGS). Conclusion – The results showed positive correlations between the majority parameters analyzed, suggesting that different assessments methods are sensible to nutritional individual status.
