Introduction – The tobacco disorder is a serious public health problem that affects the population’s health, the national economy and the natural environment. World Health Organization has proposed politics for the tobacco use, including in the workplace. Many companies in developed countries have followed the specific legislation for tobacco control. This study aims to identify the presence of tobacco control policies in companies. Material and Methods – Were selected for the research, 113 companies from different areas and sizes, within the extended city of São Paulo, between April and May/2007, in order to identify the presence of policies related to smoking restraints
and the existence of programs to eliminate the smoking habit. Results – There isn’t a total prohibition of smoking in any of the companies consulted; there’s a restraint of smoking in specific áreas in 74,3% and, in 22,1%, there are programs to eliminate this habit. Considering the company sizes, only the large companies seem to commit themselves more actively with smoking policies (p<0.05). Specific sectors, like industry, commerce and services there are no diference in smoking policies. The industry, better representative sector in this study, we observed that the size is also significative in smoking policies (p<0.05), with the largers been more effectives. Conclusion – A more effective action of the companies in terms of tobacco use control policies can, united with the public power, potentialize the results and promote health.
