Literature data show an increase in medication consumption by the elderly population. Among them, benzodiazepines which are associated with important side effects such as: decreased psychomotor activity, interaction with other medications, alcohol and the development of addiction. Thus, the objective this study is to assess the risks associated with the use of benzodiazepines by the elderly. A descriptive research was carried out on books, articles and academic papers that report on the subject based on Scielo, Lilacs and PubMed. It was found that the use of benzodiazepines by the elderly occurs in a high and long term, exceeding 4 to 6 weeks, causing adverse effects of tolerance and possible dependence. Due to the metabolic decrease, the chances of adverse reactions to the medication are higher for this age group, and pharmacokinetic changes may occur. In view the fact discussed, it is necessary to raise awareness, both for prescribers and patients, as it is a drug that is sold only under medical prescription and with limited use time. In general, there are numerous risks associated with the use of benzodiazepines by the elderly, and the pharmaceutical professional can intervene positively in search a better quality of life for the patient.
