Objective – To verify the knowledge of the nursing team related to the newborn in phototherapy. Methods – This is a cross-sectional, descriptive and exploratory research with a quantitative approach. Data were collected from August to October 2018. A questionnaire on the knowledge of newborn care in phototherapy for nursing professionals was applied. The data obtained were statistically organizedand analyzed. Results – 22 nursing professionals answered the questionnaire. When asked about the care needed for new born in phototherapy, they were significantly reminded by the groups: use eye protection; temperature monitoring; breastfeeding; remove eye protection during breastfeeding; perform change of decubitus and daily weight gauging. Asked about the possible complications and side effects to the new born in phototherapy were significantly more remembered by the groups: dehydration; increased number of bowel movements; burns and possible retinal damage and negative effects on the mother-newborn relationship. Conclusion – It was evidenced that even with the good knowledge of the nursing professionals, continuous training should be performed to make the care provided to the newborn even more effective.
