We propose a comparison between the film Fireball: Visitors from Darker Worlds (2020) by Werner Herzog and Clive Oppenheimer and the short story The Color Out of Space (1927), by H. P. Lovecraft, exploring the similarities between Herzog’s interest in extreme natural phenomena and Lovecraft’s cosmicism as both seem interested in investigating humanity’s limitations in the face of its insignificance, which becomes more apparent in the face of catastrophic events. The authors use similar settings, whether remote places, icy lands or volcanic areas, and extreme natural phenomena, such as the fall of meteorites.
Propomos uma comparação entre o documentário Fireball: Mitos, cometas e meteoros (Fireball: Visitors from Darker Worlds, 2020), de Werner Herzog e Clive Oppenheimer, e o conto A cor que caiu do espaço (The Color Out of Space, 1927), de H. P. Lovecraft, explorando as similaridades entre o interesse de Herzog por fenômenos naturais extremos e o cosmicismo de Lovecraft, já que ambos parecem interessados em investigar as limitações da humanidade diante da sua insignificância, que se torna mais aparente diante dos eventos catastróficos. Os autores se utilizam de ambientações similares, como lugares remotos, terras geladas ou áreas vulcânicas, e de fenômenos naturais extremos, como a queda de meteoritos.
