The documentary Divinas Divas (LEANDRA LEAL, 2016) portrays the trajectory of eight highly active transvestite artists in the 1960s and 1970s, who reunite to rehearse a new show. In this reunion, the memories evoked by the group take center stage and reveal significant stories from the queer lives of these artists. It is precisely these memories that this work focuses on, seeking to understand the moment when the divas emerge as artists, a period marked by the military dictatorship, as well as the role and importance of archival images used by the film in addressing these experiences. Thus, we argue that this approach allows the film to explore the contingencies of the protagonists’ lives, their travestite identities, and everything they had to face simply for being who they are and how they are.
Resumo
O documentário Divinas Divas (LEANDRA LEAL, 2016) mostra a trajetória de oito artistas travestis muito atuantes nos anos 1960 e 1970, que se reúnem para ensaiar um novo show. Nesse reencontro, as memórias evocadas pelo grupo ganham destaque e revelam histórias importantes da vida queer dessas artistas. É exatamente para essas memórias que este trabalho se volta, procurando compreender o momento em que as divas emergem como artistas, período marcado pela ditadura militar, assim como o papel e a importância das imagens de arquivo utilizadas pelo filme na abordagem de tais vivências. Desse modo, defendemos que esse enfoque permite ao filme tratar das contingências das vidas das protagonistas, de sua travestilidade e de tudo o que tiveram de enfrentar por conta apenas de serem quem são e como são.
