Objective – To evaluate and complementary practices such as oral hygiene for health professionals in patients in intensive care unit. Methods – Linked research at the Labor Education Program for Health of the Ministry of Health that provides oral health care specifically the hospitalized patient in the Intensive Care Unit, being a descriptive and quantitative research, subject to approval by the Research Ethics Committee University Paulista-UNIP in the opinion n° 984 874. The data collection was performed by application and analysis of questionnaires, with the participation of thirty (30) ICU nurses, the Hospital and Emergency Hospital August 28, located in Manaus-AM. Results – With the implementation of practice proper oral hygiene in patients critics, there was the improvement in the prevention of infections caused by microorganisms that lodge in the mouth, it was observed by the nursing team there was in the hospital routine significant reduction infection cases in the intensive care unit. Conclusion – Being so and of utmost importance to the realization of hygiene oral patient critical. The oral hygiene in ICU patients specifically depends on the nursing team, for she who will provide care to the improvement of the patient, the pois is even bedridden what makes it impossible to perform daily activities. So oral hygiene not only helps keep the sound state of the oral cavity, also more one respiratory apparatus of infection prevention.
