Dental erosion is the superficial loss of dental hard tissue as a result of a chemical process not involving bacteria. Especially with the decline in caries rate in some countries, erosion is now becoming a focus of increasing interest in dentistry research. Thus, the aim of this literature review is relate and discuss the mechanism and etiology of dental erosion. The nomenclature and classification commonly used in the dental literature are cited and summarized.
