The Down’s syndrome is caused by a genetic disturb and presents some systemic factors that act on oral manifestations, like the development and expression of the periodontal disease. Systemic diseases, just like diabetes mellitus, are known for increase the periodontal disease risk, mainly in patients without metabolic control. Thus, the purpose of this literature review is to evaluate the relationship between Down’s syndrome and diabetes mellitus, so that the dentist can be alert about the importance of the correct treatment planning and the multidisciplinary approach that must be carried out.
A síndrome de Down (SD) é decorrente de uma alteração genética e apresenta fatores sistêmicos que influenciam significativamente algumas manifestações bucais, como a presença e expressividade da doença periodontal. Doenças sistêmicas crônicas, como o diabetes mellitus (DM) são conhecidos por elevar o risco de doença periodontal, principalmente em indivíduos mal-controlados. O objetivo desta revisão de literatura é avaliar a relação entre SD e DM no âmbito odontológico para alertar ao cirurgião-dentista a importância de um planejamento adequado e de um trabalho e atuação conjunta a outros profissionais da saúde.
