The COVID-19 crisis has highlighted how inadequately prepared humanity is to manage global disasters. Conversely, this crisis also offers an exceptional opportunity to move towards a more equitable and sustainable future. This paper explores three stimuli that can lead people to the change towards sustainable Post-COVID-19 societies: crises, knowledge, and alternative paradigms. From a theoretical approach, the paper addresses the roles of each stimulus and the capacity they may have, individually or together, to encourage the debate about the relationship between environmental conditions and human crisis. This study contributes to the discussions on the importance of strategic transformations of the global consumption and production systems. It takes this unique opportunity to move towards a more sustainable future. Moreover, it urges that this transformation process be articulated with alternative paradigms that seek to go beyond inequalities, conflicts, imbalanced development, and ecological deterioration.
Resumo
A crise da COVID-19 evidenciou o quanto a humanidade estava despreparada para enfrentar desastres de escala global. Em contrapartida, essa crise também representa uma oportunidade singular para promover a transição rumo a um futuro mais equitativo e sustentável. Este artigo analisa três fatores capazes de impulsionar essa mudança em direção a sociedades pós-COVID-19 mais sustentáveis: as crises, o conhecimento e os paradigmas alternativos. A partir de uma abordagem teórica, o estudo discute o papel de cada um desses fatores e sua capacidade, de forma isolada ou combinada, de estimular o debate sobre a relação entre as condições ambientais e as crises enfrentadas pela humanidade. O trabalho contribui para as discussões acerca da importância de transformações estratégicas nos sistemas globais de produção e consumo, aproveitando a oportunidade proporcionada pela pandemia para promover um desenvolvimento mais sustentável. Além disso, destaca a necessidade de que esse processo de transformação seja articulado com paradigmas alternativos que busquem superar desigualdades, conflitos, padrões desequilibrados de desenvolvimento e a degradação ecológica.
