Memória e Artes: Um estudo de caso de alunos privados de liberdade em uma unidade prisional em Minas Gerais

The objective was to investigate and discuss the processes of (re)activation of individual and social memory in incarcerated individuals, through their participation in Art class activities within the school setting in prison units. The social relevance of the research lies in its contribution to the field of Communication through studies focused on the incarcerated community and its relationships with the field of individual memory and especially social memory. It is characterized as pioneering research, considering the scarcity of dissertations and theses on this theme in the field of Communication, according to a search conducted in the Capes repository in June 2025. The research, of a qualitative nature, was developed in a state public school located inside a prison unit in the southern region of Minas Gerais. The participants are incarcerated individuals enrolled in Art classes for the 3rd year of High School in the Youth and Adult Education (EJA) modality. For data collection, an ethnographic approach was adopted, using participant observation and systematic recording in a field diary. Data analysis was conducted using the content analysis technique with thematic categorization of the empirical corpus based on the field diary and the participants' artistic production, and analyzed in dialogue with the Art course plan established by the State Department of Education of Minas Gerais. The results obtained confirm the central hypothesis of the work, demonstrating that the curricular content present in Art classes within the prison environment can (re)activate individual and social memories of incarcerated individuals, which function as devices for identity (re)construction and facilitators of social reintegration.
