This study investigates the barriers that hinder the non-leading Brazilian higher education institutions (HEIs) in repositioning within the digital landscape based on dynamic capabilities. In-depth semistructured interviews with top managers at six non-leading HEIs show that the main barriers include uncertainty about the traditional HEI future in the digital scenario, lack of strategic tools to reposition the HEIs, lack of knowledge about the cost-benefit of an institution’s digitization, lack of knowledge on how to implement changes, and lack of information on if an HEI should (or not) meet all the new stakeholder needs. These barriers prevent HEIs from successfully adapting to the digital era. Methodologies and tools are required to guide strategic decisions, perform digitization’s cost-benefit analysis, and implement changes that meet stakeholders’ evolving demands. By overcoming these barriers, HEIs can effectively implement dynamic capabilities, transforming the challenges of the digital age into opportunities for growth and innovation.

Este estudo investiga as barreiras que impedem as instituições de ensino superior (IES) brasileiras não líderes de se reposicionarem no cenário digital com base em capacidades dinâmicas. Entrevistas semiestruturadas em profundidade com gestores de seis IES não líderes mostram que as principais barreiras incluem incerteza sobre o futuro tradicional das IES no cenário digital, falta de ferramentas estratégicas para o reposicionamento das IES, desconhecimento sobre a relação custo-benefício da digitalização, falta de conhecimento sobre como implementar mudanças e falta de informação sobre se uma IES deve (ou não) atender a todas as novas necessidades das partes interessadas. Essas barreiras impedem que as IES se adaptem com sucesso à era digital. Metodologias e ferramentas são necessárias para orientar decisões estratégicas, realizar análises de custo-benefício da digitalização e implementar mudanças que atendam às demandas em constante evolução das partes interessadas. Ao superar essas barreiras, as IES podem implementar capacidades dinâmicas de forma eficaz, transformando os desafios da era digital em oportunidades de crescimento e inovação.
