This study aimed at assessing and comparing the sustainability of a Brazilian production unit representing the production of broilers reared in an organic system with a handling unit for the production of broilers reared in a conventional system based on Emergy analysis. The analysis was carried following four steps: (i) definition, location, and data collection of broiler production units; (ii) Emergy diagram drawing; (iii) Emergy table construction; and (iv) result assessment according to the Emergy indicators in the graphical tools. According to the results, showed better environmental performance than while showed better productive efficiency. However, the Emergy Sustainability Index results indicated that is sustainable in the short term, while is unsustainable. Also, it is possible that the best environmental performance by is at the limit for systems specialized in the broiler production with a high-intensification degree. Since the corn and soybean meal were the inputs that most contributed to the total Emergy for both systems, and the yield comes from less concentrated sources of energy, the decision-making should be focused on to improve the environmental performance of the commercial broiler production systems being directed towards the reduction of the environmental load, from the use of ingredients with higher renewability i.e. organic corn and soybean feed usage.
Resumo
Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar e comparar a sustentabilidade de uma unidade produtiva brasileira representativa da criação de frangos de corte em sistema orgânico com uma unidade de manejo destinada à produção de frangos de corte em sistema convencional, utilizando a análise de emergia. A análise foi realizada em quatro etapas: (i) definição, localização e coleta de dados das unidades de produção de frangos de corte; (ii) elaboração do diagrama de emergia; (iii) construção da tabela de emergia; e (iv) avaliação dos resultados de acordo com os indicadores de emergia e ferramentas gráficas. De acordo com os resultados, o sistema orgânico apresentou melhor desempenho ambiental, enquanto o sistema convencional demonstrou maior eficiência produtiva. Entretanto, os resultados do Índice de Sustentabilidade de Emergia (ESI) indicaram que o sistema orgânico é sustentável a curto prazo, enquanto o sistema convencional é insustentável. Além disso, é possível que o melhor desempenho ambiental apresentado pelo sistema orgânico esteja no limite para sistemas especializados na produção de frangos de corte com elevado grau de intensificação. Como o milho e o farelo de soja foram os insumos que mais contribuíram para a emergia total em ambos os sistemas, e considerando que a produtividade deriva de fontes de energia menos concentradas, a tomada de decisão deve se concentrar na melhoria do desempenho ambiental dos sistemas comerciais de produção de frangos de corte, direcionando esforços para a redução da carga ambiental por meio do uso de ingredientes com maior grau de renovabilidade, como milho orgânico e farelo de soja proveniente de sistemas de alimentação orgânica.NASCIMENTO, Rafael Araújo; MORENO, Diego Andrés Rojas; LUIZ, Vitória Toffolo; ALMEIDA, Thaís Fernanda Avelar de; REZENDE, Vinícius Tavares; ANDRETA, João Marcos Bazerla; MENDES, Cecília Mitie Ifuki; GIANNETTI, Biagio Fernando; GAMEIRO, Augusto Hauber.
